Satisfy Your Cravings While Staying Low Carb
Dieters may enjoy the weight loss that comes with cutting down on carbohydrates, but they say they miss many of their favorite foods.

For the millions of Americans following a low-carb lifestyle, milk, yogurt and orange juice are among the foods hardest for them to give up.

Because of their relatively high sugar content, low-carb followers often avoid juice and traditional dairy products.

"No matter what type of diet you're on, it is always important to consume enough of the nutrients found in dairy products and juice, including protein, calcium, vitamin C and vitamin D," said Elizabeth M. Ward, nutrition consultant and co-author of "The Low-Carb Bible."

According to the Department of Agriculture, nearly 75 percent of American adults consume inadequate amounts of calcium, raising the risk of osteoporosis and other health problems.

Health experts are particularly concerned about the millions of dieters who cut back on dairy in the name of weight loss, possibly putting themselves at additional risk for calcium shortfalls.

One company has introduced a line of products that cuts carbohydrates while preserving nutrition. The Hood Carb Countdown line of dairy beverages, yogurts, smoothies and juice beverages supply significantly fewer carbohydrates while including the nutrients everyone needs for good health and the taste they've been craving.

"These lower-carb products can help anyone - no matter what their eating style - to reap the health benefits of dairy and juice while limiting carbohydrate intake," Ward said. They also may be used as key ingredients in low-carb recipes. Recipes and nutrition information for Carb Countdown products can be found at www.carbcountdown.com. Carb Countdown products may be found in the refrigerated dairy and juice sections at many retailers nationwide. - NU
